How to Protect Your Photos from Theft Online

Learn effective strategies to protect your images online, from watermarks to metadata.

Photo Protection Strategies

Every day, millions of images are stolen online. Here's how to protect yours.

1. Visible Watermarks

The most effective deterrent. Place your name or logo visibly on the image. While not unremovable, it makes theft obvious and deters most casual thieves.

2. Invisible Watermarks

Digital watermarks embedded in the image data. Not visible to the eye but detectable with special software. Useful for proving ownership.

3. Metadata

Embed your copyright info in EXIF metadata. However, metadata can be stripped, so don't rely on it alone.

4. Low-Resolution Uploads

Upload at 72 DPI and limited pixel dimensions. This makes prints look bad while remaining acceptable for screen viewing.

5. Disable Right-Click

While not foolproof, disabling right-click on your website adds a small barrier.

6. Register Copyright

For professional work, formally register your copyright for legal protection.
